Without protection from a good pair of racing boots, your feet, ankles and lower legs may be subject to major injuries.  A good pair is designs to protect you from rocks, logs, awkward falls, big crashes and nasty weather.  Most boots are ridgid in order to keep things from moving that shouldnt move during a crash or an encounter with a foreign object.

Most riders and racers protect themselves with a pair of boots everytime they ride and typcially spend anywhere from $100 to $600.  If you ride alot you will want to invest in a comfortable pair that you can stand to have on for hours at a time.  There are many different styles to choose from including some that offer hinges near the ankle area to provide a better range of motion, removable liners for those that prefer to wash the insides more easily.  Another popular style is a boot that has a removable sole.  This style allows the owner to purchase another sole and salvage an otherwise wasted boot.  The tread pattern of the sole is also important and depending on the foot pegs and terrains that you typically ride in will dictate which route you will want to go.

Buckles are another feature that each manufacturer offers a slightly different style of.  The buckles offer their own distinct comfort level and depending on the rider he or she may choose one boot over another based on the buckle system alone.

Most dirt bike boots have an armored sheild of some sort, back in the day boots actually had a metal plate in the shin area, but now that composites are available many boots simply offer a tough composite impact plate that absorbs impacts much better than the old standard steel plate.

Dual Sport are styled more like a boot shoe and are a bit more comfortable to walk about in when you are off of the bike.  Not as protective, but for the typical riding that is done they serve a good purpose.
